FreeNAS 8 hardware recommendation

Posted at 2011/10/06 11:54 in [Tech]
I had been researching couple of days before I finally decided what to buy in order to build up NAS. Here is the list of parts that were used recently to build up my NAS.

1) Motherboard: SUPERMICRO X7SPA-H-D525

2) Case:LIAN LI PC-Q08B Black Aluminum Mini-ITX

3) PSU: OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W Modular High Performance Power Supply

4) HDD&RAM: Whatever you want.

1) Since Intel Atom motherboards don't have enough sata ports, I had to put a sata/raid controller to get enough sata ports if I decided to go with Intel motherboards. Moreover, Intel motherboards have on-board Realtek 8111E NIC which I don't really like personally. On the other hands, the Supermicro motherboard provides 6 sata ports and Intel dual NIC which really attracted me. Although the Supermicro motherboard is a bit pricey, it has everything that are necessary for building up NAS.

2) I really wanted to have a hot-swapable case. There were one or two hot-swapable cases; however, they seemed to be pricey compared to their quality. In fact, I didn't want to spend lots of money for the case. So, I finally gave up to get a hot-swapable case. Instead, I decided to get PC-Q08B which has 1x5.25, 6x3.5, and 1x2.5 for SSD. Another advantage of PC-Q08B is supporting ATX PSU that allowed me to put a cheap PSU into it.

3) There were three reasons that I bought OCZ PSU. First, there was a promotion that newegg gave me a free ASUS ODD if I bought this PSU. Another reason was that there was also mail-in rebate. Finally, the most important reason was that OCZ ModXStream provides modular connectors. Since ITX cases are really small, I indeed needed to minimize cables inside my case. Whatever PSU you use, modular connectors are really helpful if it's ATX PSU.
